Description
Judd-338, Pollock-390, is the first of seven 1863 proof half dollar patterns (J-338 through J-344) that continued the motto experimentation begun in 1861 and 1862. By 1863, the Mint had accumulated two years of experience with motto designs on the half dollar and could refine its approach based on feedback from officials and collectors who had examined the earlier patterns. This variety features the Seated Liberty obverse with a With Motto reverse, building on the GOD OUR TRUST experiments of J-277 through J-280 (1861) and J-293 through J-296 (1862), now using the IN GOD WE TRUST wording that would be adopted.
Rarity Notes
