Judd-339, Pollock-391, is the second 1863 proof half dollar motto pattern. This variety presents an alternative arrangement of the motto and eagle devices on the reverse, providing another option for comparison. The seven varieties of 1863 half dollar patterns represent a significant expansion from the four varieties produced in each of the two preceding years, suggesting the design process was entering a more intensive refinement phase. The half dollar remained the primary testbed for motto development because its large size provided the most room for experimentation.
