Description
This 1788 Vermont copper has a reverse with the legend arranged ET LIB INDE. In October 1786 Vermont extended Harmon's grant for eight years from July 1, 1787 and ordered a new design: a head with AUCTORITATE VERMONTENSIUM, shortened on the coins to AUCTORI VERMON, and a seated woman with INDE ET LIB. In 1787 Harmon and his partners joined the owners of Machin's Mills near Newburgh, New York, and some dies of these years turn up with dies of other coppers. Crosby lists a 1788 reverse reading ET LIB INDE punctuated with stars. PCGS number 569.
