Description
This 1785 Vermont copper has the landscape design with the legend VERMONTS RES PUBLICA. Vermont, then an independent republic, gave Reuben Harmon Jr. of Rupert the sole right to coin copper in June 1785. The first type shows the sun rising over wooded hills with a plow in the field, and on the reverse an eye in a glory within thirteen stars and the words STELLA QUARTA DECIMA, Latin for the fourteenth star. A letter printed by Crosby names William Coley, a goldsmith, as the maker of the dies. Crosby found two pairs of dies with this legend, told apart by where one ray of the sun points. Catalogue numbers: RR-2, Bressett 1-A. PCGS number 539.
