Description
This 1785 Vermont copper has the landscape design with the legend VERMONTIS RES PUBLICA. Vermont, then an independent republic, gave Reuben Harmon Jr. of Rupert the sole right to coin copper in June 1785. The first type shows the sun rising over wooded hills with a plow in the field, and on the reverse an eye in a glory within thirteen stars and the words STELLA QUARTA DECIMA, Latin for the fourteenth star. A letter printed by Crosby names William Coley, a goldsmith, as the maker of the dies. Crosby notes eight trees on the hills and wedge-shaped rays on the reverse. PCGS number 542.
