Description
This 1785 copper pairs a Vermont head die with the IMMUNE COLUMBIA reverse. Vermont's second type, ordered in October 1786, has a head with AUCTORI VERMON and a seated woman with INDE ET LIB. In 1787 Harmon and his partners joined the owners of Machin's Mills near Newburgh, New York, and some Vermont dies were paired with dies made for other coppers. Crosby describes the reverse as Liberty seated to the right with scales, IMMUNE COLUMBIA and 1785, and thought the piece may be a discarded Vermont die muled with that reverse. PCGS number 536.
