Description
This 1786 Vermont copper has the landscape design with the legend VERMONTENSIUM RES PUBLICA. Vermont, then an independent republic, gave Reuben Harmon Jr. of Rupert the sole right to coin copper in June 1785. The first type shows the sun rising over wooded hills with a plow in the field, and on the reverse an eye in a glory within thirteen stars and the words STELLA QUARTA DECIMA, Latin for the fourteenth star. A letter printed by Crosby names William Coley, a goldsmith, as the maker of the dies. Crosby found it with three obverse and two reverse dies. PCGS number 545.
