Description
This 1787 Vermont copper has a head facing left with VERMON AUCTORI. In October 1786 Vermont extended Harmon's grant for eight years from July 1, 1787 and ordered a new design: a head with AUCTORITATE VERMONTENSIUM, shortened on the coins to AUCTORI VERMON, and a seated woman with INDE ET LIB. In 1787 Harmon and his partners joined the owners of Machin's Mills near Newburgh, New York, and some dies of these years turn up with dies of other coppers. Crosby found its obverse the same as a die of 1786 and its reverse with a break that nearly hides the date. PCGS number 557.
