Absent the letter "P" that normally appears near the bust on the obverse, this Voce Populi halfpenny variety represents the most available of the missing-letter Voce Populi types — yet it remains scarce, rated R.3 to R.4 on the standard colonial rarity scale, with high-grade survivors being particularly difficult to locate. Cataloged as W-13900, Nelson 2, and Zelinka 4-D, the obverse shows a laureate bust facing right surrounded by the legend "VOCE POPULI" ("By the Voice of the People") and the date 1760, while the reverse depicts Hibernia — the personification of Ireland — seated with a harp and the inscription "HIBERNIA." The "P" that is missing from this variety is believed to stand for the engraver or sponsor of the dies, and its absence creates a distinct die variety collected separately from the P-bearing types. The Voce Populi halfpence were struck in Dublin, Ireland, for circulation in the American colonies during the 1760s, a period when British colonial monetary policy restricted the supply of official coinage to the American market, creating demand for privately produced copper tokens.
