About This Series

The first U.S. coin to carry the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, introduced during the Civil War. James B. Longacre designed the shield obverse and wreath reverse. The Small Motto variety of 1864 is significantly rarer than the Large Motto. Mintages dropped dramatically after 1865, and the denomination was officially abolished in 1873.
