Die clashing occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them — a malfunction that leaves each die impressed with a mirror-image transfer of the opposing die's design elements. When these clashed dies subsequently strike planchets, the resulting coins display faint, incuse impressions of design elements from the opposite side appearing where they should not exist. The Montana State Quarter reverse, designed by Don Everhart and depicting a bison skull above a Montana landscape with the inscription "Big Sky Country," provided a complex design field where clash marks from John Flanagan's Washington obverse could transfer into the open areas between design elements.
