Shield Nickels 1866-1883

About This Series

The first five-cent nickel coin, introduced to replace fractional currency and the half dime. James B. Longacre's design features a Union shield on the obverse. The 1866-1867 issues have rays between the stars on the reverse, removed in 1867 to improve die life. The 1883/2 overdate and proof-only 1877 and 1878 are key varieties.
