About This Coin
The Military Bust group of the Washington Pieces (1783-1800) series holds the pieces described below. The military bust pieces are dated 1783 and read WASHINGTON & INDEPENDENCE around a laureate bust in uniform; the reverse shows Liberty seated with UNITED STATES and the letters T.W.I. E.S. in the exergue. Baker lists them as No. 4, from two pairs of dies differing in their lettering, one of them found with an engrailed edge, and says the 1783 pieces were made in England.
