About This Coin
Washington tokens dated 1783 from the "Washington & Independence" series, distinguished by a military bust portrait showing Washington in uniform with epaulettes. Three varieties exist based on bust size and edge treatment: the Large Military Bust on a broad flan, and two Small Bust versions with either plain or engrailed (grained) edges. These were struck in copper, likely in England, and represent one of the most common Washington token types from this period. The military portrait contrasts with the civilian Draped Bust pieces in the same series, offering collectors a paired set showing Washington in both his roles as general and citizen.
