Description
Combining a small bust portrait of George Washington with a grained (reeded) edge treatment, this 1783 cent from the Washington & Independence series represents a specific die marriage and edge variety within one of the earliest American coin series to feature the nation's first president. The military bust pieces are dated 1783 and read WASHINGTON & INDEPENDENCE around a laureate bust in uniform; the reverse shows Liberty seated with UNITED STATES and the letters T.W.I. E.S. in the exergue. Baker lists them as No. 4, from two pairs of dies differing in their lettering, one of them found with an engrailed edge, and says the 1783 pieces were made in England. It is catalogued as Baker-4. PCGS lists it as #673.
