About This Coin
The Massachusetts Pine Tree silver coins, struck in sterling silver (.925 fine) with irregular hand-cut planchet edges, represent the third of the tree-design series produced at the Boston mint of John Hull and Robert Sanderson. Pine Tree coins were the last Massachusetts design, made from about 1667 until the mint closed in 1682. The first shillings were struck on broad, thin planchets with a rocker press; from about 1675 the shillings were struck on smaller, thicker planchets with a screw press. Sixpences and threepences were made alongside them, and all are dated 1652.
