Description

A die variety of the large planchet Pine Tree shilling distinguished by the presence of pellets (small raised dots) in the design field, typically flanking the tree on the obverse or appearing near the denomination on the reverse. Pellets served decorative and spacing functions in colonial die engraving, and their presence, absence, or arrangement is a primary diagnostic for attributing Massachusetts colonial die varieties. The obverse shows the characteristic straight-trunked pine tree with its symmetrical branches, encircled by MASATHVSETS IN, with the distinguishing pellets visible in the field.
