1652 Shilling Pine Tree - Large Planchet - Pellets
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A die variety of the large planchet Pine Tree shilling distinguished by the presence of pellets (small raised dots) in the design field, typically flanking the tree on the obverse or appearing near the denomination on the reverse. Pellets served decorative and spacing functions in colonial die engraving, and their presence, absence, or arrangement is a primary diagnostic for attributing Massachusetts colonial die varieties. The obverse shows the characteristic straight-trunked pine tree with its symmetrical branches, encircled by MASATHVSETS IN, with the distinguishing pellets visible in the field. The reverse carries the XII denomination and NEW ENGLAND AN DOM 1652. The large planchet format (approximately 27-29mm) provides sufficient field space for these additional elements to be visible even on moderately worn specimens. Pellet varieties are significant in die study because they reveal intentional design choices by the die sinker. Each pellet was individually punched into the die face, requiring a conscious decision about placement. Their function was purely ornamental, or they served as die identification markers — a primitive form of quality control that allowed the mintmaster to track which dies were producing which coins. The Noe catalog distinguishes multiple Pine Tree shilling varieties based in part on pellet configuration. The Pellets variety within the large planchet format represents one of the more readily identifiable subtypes, as the pellets remain visible on coins in grades where finer legend details have been lost to wear. This makes it a useful entry point for collectors beginning to explore Massachusetts colonial die varieties.
Rarity Notes
