About This Coin
The Massachusetts Willow Tree silver coins, struck in sterling silver (.925 fine) with irregular hand-cut planchet edges, represent the first of the three tree-design series produced at the Boston mint of John Hull and Robert Sanderson. Willow Tree coins were the first tree design, ordered by the General Court on October 19, 1652: a tree inside a ring of beads with MASATHVSETS IN on one side, and the value with NEW ENGLAND and the date on the other. Mossman dates them from late 1652 to about 1660, struck now and then rather than steadily, and Noe noted that the new dies were far harder to cut than the NE punches. Every Willow Tree coin is dated 1652.
