Description
A die variety of the large planchet Pine Tree shilling notable for the omission of the letter H from the obverse legend, which normally reads MASATHVSETS IN. Pine Tree coins were the last Massachusetts design, made from about 1667 until the mint closed in 1682. The first shillings were struck on broad, thin planchets with a rocker press; from about 1675 the shillings were struck on smaller, thicker planchets with a screw press. Sixpences and threepences were made alongside them, and all are dated 1652. This is Noe-11 (Salmon 9-F, W-760), on which the obverse legend lacks the H of MASATHVSETS. Cataloged as PCGS #45371.
