About This Coin
Silver coins struck in 1783 by John Chalmers, an Annapolis, Maryland silversmith, in response to a shortage of small change after the Revolutionary War. Three denominations were produced: threepence, sixpence, and shilling. The dies were engraved by Thomas Sparrow. The shilling's famous reverse depicts two birds fighting over a worm.
