Recognized as the most extensively collected early American coin series, the Capped Bust Half Dollar combines artistic elegance with extraordinary die variety diversity. John Reich designed the obverse of Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap, paired with a heraldic eagle reverse. The Overton reference catalogs over 200 known die varieties across two subtypes: Lettered Edge (1807-1836) and Reeded Edge (1836-1839). Half dollars served as the workhorse denomination of early American commerce — the largest readily available silver coin for significant transactions when silver dollars were scarce. Struck exclusively at Philadelphia, the series includes famous overdates, die cracks, and recut features that fascinate variety specialists. The 1817/4 overdate and 1836 Reeded Edge transitional type are among the most pursued varieties.
