Braided Hair Half Cents 1840-1857

About This Series

The final half cent series, designed by Christian Gobrecht, features a mature portrait of Liberty with braided hair. Most dates from 1840 to 1848 were struck only as proofs for collectors. Business strikes resumed from 1849 to 1857, when the denomination was discontinued. The series marks the end of the half cent in American coinage.
