2025 (P) Ida B. Wells Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse VDDO-002

Description

Contemporary variety discovery on the latest year of the American Women Quarters program, VDDO-002 documents medium spread West on OD of GOD, the inner middle of the queue (ponytail), and hair curls, with Southward spread on the upper eyelid — a multi-directional doubling pattern that affects both the motto and portrait detail on the 2025-dated obverse. Die markers UVC-???? and DMR-00? carry placeholder codes awaiting specimen confirmation by VarietyVista, with three die stages documented: Stage A showing both obverse and reverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The American Women Quarters program (2022-2025) features Laura Gardin Fraser's George Washington obverse portrait — a design originally created in 1931 but passed over in favor of John Flanagan's portrait until its adoption in 2022. The Westward spread on OD of GOD combined with Southward displacement on the upper eyelid indicates a complex hub movement that was not purely linear — the different spread directions on different design elements suggest either a tilted or distorted hub mechanism rather than simple lateral displacement. As a 2025 variety, VDDO-002 represents active current-year discovery, placing it at the frontier of variety research where die stage documentation is still developing and additional specimens are actively being sought by the variety community.
