Description

Designated VDDO-010 by VarietyVista, this 2024 Philadelphia Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray quarter features a Very Doubled Die Obverse, meaning the doubling is strong enough to be visible without magnification to the trained eye. The VDDO classification indicates a pronounced level of hub spread that elevates this variety above standard doubled die designations. Medium spread appears on the upper eye, with light spread also visible on the inner middle queue of the portrait. Three die stages have been recorded. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. By Stage B at mid-die state, multiple deterioration markers have emerged: a die chip on the cheek, a die chip on the upper right head area including the glasses and throat region, a large die break under the right collar, and a die chip on the southwest corner of the P in HOPE. Stage C in late die state is unconfirmed. As part of the American Women Quarters program, the Pauli Murray design features detailed portraiture that readily reveals doubling, and the eye and queue spread on VDDO-010 offer accessible attribution points for collectors examining this recent issue.
