Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-002 on the 2023 Jefferson Nickel, this doubled die reverse exhibits a medium spread directed South on the letters E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, along with an extra floor visible between pillars 1, 2, and 3 of the Monticello portico, and additional spread affecting the letters NTICE of MONTICELLO. The southward spread direction indicates the secondary hub impression was displaced downward relative to the primary impression, generating shadow lines below the affected design elements. Die marker codes are listed as UVC-???? and DMR-00?, reflecting that formal classification numbers had not yet been assigned at the time of cataloging — a status common for recently discovered varieties awaiting full documentation. Three die stages are provisionally documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Return to Monticello reverse, reintroduced in 2006 after the Westward Journey series, restored Felix Schlag's rendering of Jefferson's Charlottesville estate; the columns, windows, steps, and inscription provide parallel reference lines where even minor hub displacement becomes apparent. The 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy at 5.0 grams. Collectors searching for VDDR-002 should focus on the E PLU inscription area and the floor between the first three pillars under 7x to 10x magnification, using side lighting angled from the north to maximize contrast with the southward-spread secondary impressions.
