Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as 2023-P WDDR-034 in the Wexler files, this Jefferson Nickel displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible along the right side of the center door, along the left side of the door to the right of the center door, and on the large semicircular window of Monticello. The architectural elements of Thomas Jefferson's plantation home — with their precise geometric lines and curved window shapes — provide excellent surfaces for detecting tilted hub displacement, as even slight angular deviation between the hub and die produces visible parallel-shifted edges on the building's straight lines and distorted arcs on its curved elements. Obverse die markers include two die dots below the S of TRUST and a die gouge in the field to the lower left of Jefferson's right ear. The reverse carries multiple markers: two die dots positioned one above and one below the crossbar of the first T of STATES, a die dot to the right of the D of UNITED, and a die dot below the CE of CENTS. This array of six die dot markers across both sides provides exceptional attribution confidence, as the specific pattern of dot positions creates a unique die fingerprint that is highly unlikely to be replicated on any other die pair. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2023 in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Brian A. Ribar's attribution work on this variety contributes to the extensive documentation of Jefferson Nickel doubled die varieties, with the Return to Monticello reverse design providing rich architectural detail for doubling analysis.
