2023 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 2023 WDDR-031 Jefferson nickel from Philadelphia presents a very nice example of Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling affecting the top step of the center steps and the tops of the letters T, I, C, and E of MONTICELLO. The Wexler designation is 2023-P WDDR-031. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The reverse carries a useful set of diagnostics: two die gouges appear below the second U and S of PLURIBUS, a die gouge sits above the small left window, and another die gouge is positioned to the right of the S in CENTS. The extension of the doubling from the architectural steps into the building's name MONTICELLO makes this variety particularly appealing, as collectors can observe the tilted hub effect across both structural and lettering elements in a single viewing area. Brian A. Ribar's attribution work on 2023 Philadelphia nickel varieties has expanded the catalog significantly for this recent production year.
