Description

Earning the coveted "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, this 2023 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits strong Class VIII tilted hub doubling across an unusually broad range of reverse design elements. The doubling shows on the letters O, N, T, I, C, and E of MONTICELLO, above the top of the center steps, on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and both sides of the building. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the left of Jefferson’s left eye, while the reverse features a long die scratch extending from the right side of the large semicircular window. Attributed by Craig Simpson under the Wexler Team, WDDR-030’s Class VIII mechanism results from a hub tilted relative to the die face during impression, producing displacement that varies in direction and intensity across the design depending on each element’s position relative to the tilt axis. The breadth of affected elements spanning from the building name through the national legend to the architectural details makes this one of the most comprehensively doubled Jefferson Nickel reverses in the modern series.
