Description

Unlike the step-focused WDDR-004 from the same year, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-029 concentrates its Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the letters N, T, and I of the MONTICELLO inscription — producing notably crisp doubling on the estate's name that is among the more visually appealing effects in the 2023-P doubled die group. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the emphasis on lettering rather than architectural elements creates a different attribution experience, where magnification reveals the secondary impression shadowing specific characters rather than structural lines. Obverse die markers include a die gouge on Jefferson's forehead, while the reverse carries a die gouge to the left of the dome, another below the N of UNUM, and a die dot above the O of OF. This constellation of markers across both sides provides multiple confirmation points for die pair identification. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-029, this variety demonstrates how Class VIII tilted hub doubling can produce visually distinct results depending on which design elements fall within the displacement zone of a particular hub-to-die tilt angle.
