Description

Displaying very nice Class VIII tilted hub doubling, the 2023 WDDR-026 is one of an extraordinary number of doubled die reverse varieties documented on the Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel from this production year. The doubling appears above the top step of the center steps and on the letters T, I, C, and E of MONTICELLO, concentrated in the central architectural elements of the building's facade. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this variety carries distinctive die markers on both sides: the obverse shows three die dots in the field to the right of Jefferson's left eye, while the reverse exhibits a die gouge in the upper portion of the R of AMERICA and another die gouge in the field below the R of PLURIBUS. The variety is cataloged under the Wexler designation 2023-P WDDR-026. The clustering of doubling on the MONTICELLO lettering and the step area suggests the hub tilt was oriented to affect the central lower portion of the reverse die most strongly. Collectors working through 2023 Philadelphia nickel rolls should use the three obverse die dots near Jefferson's eye as a quick preliminary identifier before confirming the reverse doubling.
