Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 2023 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-022 exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling across multiple architectural elements of the Monticello facade. The doubling is visible on the upper and lower portions of the large semicircular window above the steps, the tops of columns two through four, the right edge of the large triangle, and the left side of the triangle above the center door. On the obverse, die scratches appear to the right of and below the second T of TRUST. The reverse carries a die gouge above the U of UNITED. This regular strike variety demonstrates how tilted hub doubling can simultaneously affect multiple structural features of the Monticello design, creating a pattern of displacement that radiates across the building's facade. The breadth of affected elements — window, columns, and pediment — makes this one of the more comprehensive Monticello doubled dies in the 2023 nickel series.
