Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel WDDR-015 exhibits Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling — produced when the hub and die are not perfectly parallel during hubbing, creating a spread geometrically different from Class I rotational or Class II offset events. Doubling. Class VIII spread is visible along the top edge of the center steps and on the tops of the T, I, and C of MONTICELLO. Felix Schlag's design places Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse, in 75% copper and 25% nickel. Obverse die markers include die chips on Jefferson's chin and nose, and a die chip above the left eye. Reverse die markers include a die gouge above the T of UNITED; a die gouge below the M of MONTICELLO; a die gouge between the V and E of FIVE; a die gouge between the R and I of AMERICA; a die gouge in the lower right arch; and a heavy impression of unknown source through columns 3 and 4. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-015. The Class VIII step-top and MONTICELLO-TIC doubling, combined with three obverse die chips and six reverse gouges, provides a comprehensive attribution package for this modern Jefferson Nickel doubled die entry.
