Description

Attributed by expert Brian A. Ribar, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible above the top step below the center door and on the tops of the letters T, I, C, E of MONTICELLO. On the obverse, two die gouges (dots) appear to the left of the designer's initials DW and below the bottom left corner of the second 2 of the date. On the reverse, a heavy die gouge sits at the upper left of the small right window, a die dot above T of UNITED, a die gouge in the field below S of PLURIBUS, and a die gouge above the second L of MONTICELLO. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during die production, creating directional spread that varies across the die face. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the Jefferson Nickel series has maintained this composition since its debut in 1938, except during the wartime silver alloy years of 1942-1945. The multiple reverse die gouges serve as reliable diagnostics for confirming this variety under magnification.
