Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible at the top of column 1 and inside the left portion of the left long window on the Monticello reverse. The tilted hub mechanism produces a rotational spread when the hub shifts slightly off-axis during die production, creating doubling that follows a curved path rather than a straight lateral or vertical displacement. Several die markers aid in identification: on the obverse, die gouges appear on Jefferson's forehead, while the reverse shows a die gouge in the field above the M of AMERICA, another to the upper right of the small right window, a third below the F of FIVE, and a fourth to the lower left of column 1. These gouges are incuse marks transferred from raised imperfections on the die surface. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2023-P WDDR-012, this variety demonstrates the ongoing productivity of modern Jefferson Nickel die variety research, where dozens of new doubled dies are documented annually from Philadelphia Mint production.
