Description

Classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, this fifth Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel shows doubling on the top step below the center door and the C of MONTICELLO on Jamie Franki's Monticello reverse design. Class VIII doubling results from a hub that contacts the die at a slight tilt during the die sinking process, producing displacement that varies in magnitude across the design depending on each element's distance from the tilt axis — elements farther from the axis show greater separation than those closer to it. Die markers include a die gouge above the E of WE on the obverse and, on the reverse, a die chip on the left portion of Monticello's dome plus a die dot to the right of the F of OF. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDR-005, this variety was documented by Brian A. Ribar, a prolific contributor to modern die variety research. The 2023-P Jefferson Nickel continues the Return to Monticello design that has been in production since 2006, and the architectural detail of Monticello — with its columns, steps, dome, and door — provides numerous fine elements where tilted hub doubling can produce visible separation. Five documented doubled die reverses for the 2023-P reflects the ongoing productivity of die variety research on current-year coinage, where alert collectors can still discover new varieties by examining coins from circulation or bank-wrapped rolls. The top step and MONTICELLO lettering are established diagnostic areas that variety researchers routinely examine on Jefferson Nickel reverses.
