Description

Attributed by Daniel McGlew and carrying the Wexler Variety ID 2022-P WDDR-010, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubled die reverse was discovered on a 2022 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The Class VIII doubling is visible below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello building, a location on the design that has proven susceptible to showing tilted hub displacement across multiple date varieties in the modern Jefferson nickel series. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the left of the first 2 of the date and a die dot to the left of the upper portion of the L of LIBERTY. Reverse markers show a die gouge between the C and E of CENT and a die gouge between the upper portions of the O and F of OF. The 2022 Jefferson nickel was composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Class VIII tilted hub doubling is created when the hub contacts the die face at a slight angle rather than perfectly parallel, producing displacement that varies in strength depending on distance from the tilt axis. The door frame area above the Monticello steps appears to be positioned at a sensitive distance from typical tilt axes, as multiple varieties across different years show doubling in this same general area. Daniel McGlew's attribution of this variety contributes to the growing catalog of modern Jefferson nickel doubled dies that demonstrates the continued occurrence of hub misalignment varieties despite advances in die preparation technology.
