Description

Premier DDR attribution for the 2021 Lincoln Shield Cent, submitted by Ryan Fowble and cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2021 1¢ WDDR-001. Moderate extra thickness appears on the designer's initials LB (Lyndall Bass, obverse sculptor) and JFM (Jim Ferrell / Joseph Menna attribution marks on the reverse). Obverse die markers include a short die scratch below the L in LIBERTY. The reverse shows a die crack running across the top left of the shield — a structurally significant fracture that would have progressed with continued use — along with two die chips positioned north of the P in PLURIBUS. No other cross-references are currently known. As the first doubled die reverse cataloged for the 2021 date, WDDR-001 holds particular interest for Shield Cent variety collectors building date-complete DDR sets. Both obverse and reverse lack additional significant markers beyond those noted, suggesting this die pair was caught relatively early in its production life.
