2021 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
ErrorDescription
Identified by Aaron Laramee and cataloged as 2021-P WDDR-010, this Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the Jefferson Nickel manifests below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps — the same architectural zone that has proven highly productive for Class VIII discoveries across multiple dates in the Return to Monticello series. No significant obverse die markers have been noted, placing the attribution burden on the reverse, where diagnostic markers are abundant: a long curving die dent or feeder gouge passes through the center door, three die gouges sit above the long right window, and a die gouge appears above the S of CENTS. The feeder gouge through the center door is particularly noteworthy — feeder gouges are created when metal shavings or debris from the striking process scratch the die face, producing raised lines on subsequently struck coins that can resemble intentional design elements but lack the regular geometry of engraved features. The presence of a feeder gouge through the exact same door frame area where the Class VIII doubling appears creates a potential diagnostic complication: examiners must distinguish between the tilted-hub doubling below the door frame's upper left and the incidental gouge line passing through the door, as both produce raised features in the same zone. The three die gouges above the long right window and the gouge above S of CENTS provide spatially separated confirmation points that help isolate the doubling from the feeder gouge artifact. The 2021-P nickel was struck at Philadelphia in standard copper-nickel composition, and WDDR-010's tenth catalog position for the year reflects sustained variety documentation on this modern issue.
