2021 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Brantley Ditto's discovery of WDDR-004 documents Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps on the 2021 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel. The tilted hub mechanism — where non-parallel alignment between hub and die creates progressive displacement across the die surface — has become the dominant doubling class documented on modern Jefferson Nickel reverses, owing to the Monticello architecture's geometric sensitivity to even minute angular misalignment. Obverse die markers show nothing significant noted, placing the full attribution burden on the reverse: a die gouge extending from the bottom right of the second U in UNUM, and a small die dot positioned above and between the two L's of MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2021-P WDDR-004, this variety emerged from Philadelphia's 2021 nickel production — a year when the U.S. Mint was recovering from the pandemic-related coin shortage that had begun in mid-2020 and prompted public campaigns to increase coin circulation. The die gouge from UNUM's second U and the die dot between the L's of MONTICELLO create a two-point reverse fingerprint that distinguishes WDDR-004 from the three previously cataloged 2021 DDR varieties. Ditto's attribution contributes to the growing community of variety researchers expanding the modern Jefferson Nickel DDR catalog.
