2021 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee, WDDR-005 of the 2021 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling below the right side of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub tilts during hubbing, producing a diagonal displacement along an angled axis rather than the horizontal or vertical paths of other doubling classes. The 2021 issue represents the second year of the redesigned Jefferson Nickel obverse by Phebe Hemphill, introduced in 2020 for a more contemporary artistic interpretation of Thomas Jefferson. A diagnostic die marker reinforces attribution: a small die gouge appears in the field above the dot over the lowercase "i" in Liberty — the redesigned obverse renders this inscription in flowing cursive script with lowercase letters, a modern departure from traditional block capitals. Monticello's center doorway provides a precise location for the doubling, and the Class VIII tilted displacement should be visible under moderate magnification as a diagonal shadow below the door frame's right edge.
