Description

Extending the Class VIII tilted hub doubling pattern into 2021, this ninth doubled die reverse for the Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello building. The center door frame area has proven to be one of the most productive diagnostic zones for Class VIII tilted hub doubling on Jefferson Nickel reverses, with numerous varieties across multiple years showing displacement in this same region. Die markers on both sides aid attribution: the obverse carries a die chip between the E and R of LIBERTY along with two die chips in Jefferson's hair to the left and lower left of his right ear. On the reverse, a die chip appears in the field to the left of the building, and a die dot sits above the E of AMERICA. Attributed by Aaron Laramee and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2021-P WDDR-009, the four die markers spread across obverse portrait detail, inscription, and reverse field areas collectively provide strong identification for confirming this specific die pair among the multiple varieties cataloged for the date.
