2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-031

Description

Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 2019 1-cent WDDO-031, this Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent exhibits sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY, most clearly visible where the upper left branch of the Y is thicker than the upper right branch. No doubling appears on the date. Die chips above the R of LIBERTY mark the obverse die. Notably, the reverse of this coin is itself a doubled die listed separately as 2019 1-cent WDDR-006, making this a dual doubled die pairing where both the obverse and reverse carry independent attributions. Reverse die markers include die gouges within and below the ME of AMERICA, a die scratch extending from the top of the I of UNITED toward the rim, a possible die chip to the right of the middle of the T of UNITED, and sloped extra thickness on the designer's initials LB with a small die chip well to the southeast of the B. The convergence of WDDO-031 and WDDR-006 on a single coin makes this pairing especially attractive to modern Lincoln cent variety specialists.
