2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2019 1-cent WDDO-024 with no other known cross-references, the twenty-fourth doubled die obverse for the 2019 Lincoln Shield Cent shows extra thickness on LIBERTY with no corresponding doubling on the date — an asymmetric distribution of hub displacement that reveals the geometry of the specific misalignment event affecting this working die. The die markers supporting attribution are detailed and diagnostic: on the obverse, a die crack extends south from the bottom left corner of the B of LIBERTY, light die scratches run south-southeast from the bottom of BE of LIBERTY, and a die scratch extends toward the northeast from between Lincoln's lips. On the reverse, a die chip appears above the R of PLURIBUS. The concentration of doubling on LIBERTY without involvement of the date suggests the hub displacement vector was oriented primarily along the left-center field of the obverse die, affecting the inscription zone while leaving the lower-right date area outside the displacement footprint. Twenty-four documented DDOs for a single year of Lincoln cent production reflects the enormous mintage volumes that modern Philadelphia Mint cent production generates, with correspondingly large working die populations. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, the 2019 Lincoln Shield Cent continues Brenner's century-old portrait design alongside the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010.
