2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-021
Error
Description
While no significant doubling appears on LIBERTY, WDDO-021 on the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits sloped extra thickness on the date digits. The subtle nature of this doubling on the date, combined with the absence of doubling on LIBERTY, suggests a minor hub displacement that affected only the lower portion of the obverse design. Obverse die markers include a die crack extending through the left side of W of WE down into the hair where it intersects another die crack, creating a branching crack pattern. Reverse markers comprise a die crack running across the top left of the shield, a die chip above the B of PLURIBUS, and a die chip in the field above the O of ONE. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2019 1¢ WDDO-021, the intersecting crack network in the WE-hair area provides the most visually accessible obverse diagnostic for this variety.
