Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDO-018 on the 2019-P Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits significant extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the upper left portion of the Y appearing noticeably thicker than the upper right — an asymmetry that serves as a key diagnostic feature for this variety. The doubling is concentrated in the LIBERTY legend, where careful comparison of letter stroke widths reveals the telltale thickening that indicates hub doubling occurred during die production. Reverse die markers provide valuable confirmation: a die crack traverses the top left area of the shield, running north of the letters UR in PLURIBUS, giving collectors a secondary feature to verify attribution even on circulated examples. No significant obverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been recorded. The 2019 Philadelphia cent was produced in the copper-plated zinc composition standard since 1982. Shield reverse Lincoln cents, introduced in 2010, replaced the four rotating reverse designs of the 2009 bicentennial year with a permanent Union Shield motif. WDDO-018 stands among the notable doubled die varieties for this modern design type, and the pronounced thickness differential on the Y offers one of the more accessible pickup points for collectors searching through quantities of recent-date cents.
