Description

A modern doubled die on the Lincoln Shield Cent series, WDDO-009 from the 2019 Philadelphia issue delivers significant extra thickness on the date — the strongest intensity short of "very strong," indicating clearly broadened numeral strokes detectable at moderate magnification. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse replacing the Lincoln Memorial, continues Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait now in its second century of production. A distinctive die marker aids attribution: parallel die scratches run north-northeast from the top of Lincoln's chin, creating fine linear impressions that serve as a fingerprint for this specific working die. These scratches are independent of the hub doubling and remain consistent across all die states. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. The 2019-P was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition. Begin with the date under 5x to 7x magnification, where significant extra thickness produces visibly broadened numeral strokes, then confirm the parallel die scratches above Lincoln's chin.
