Description

Seventh in the Wexler obverse doubled die census for the 2019 Lincoln Shield cent, WDDO-007 exhibits significant extra thickness on the date digits — a level of spread that places this variety among the more prominent doubled dies documented for the modern Shield reverse era that began in 2010. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait has adorned the cent obverse since 1909, and by 2019 the design had been paired with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse for nearly a decade. The Wexler Team recorded no significant obverse die markers beyond the doubling itself, but the reverse carries a distinctive diagnostic: a pre-die chip depression located on the top left of the shield north of the L in PLURIBUS. This incipient die chip — a depression in the die surface that has not yet fully broken away — provides a reliable secondary fingerprint for confirming the correct die independent of the doubled date. The significant extra thickness classification indicates the doubling exceeds what would be produced by minor hub misalignment, creating noticeably thickened digit contours visible under moderate magnification. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID: 2019 1¢ WDDO-007, with no additional attribution system listings currently known. The Lincoln Shield cent series has generated a substantial doubled die census despite the Mint's transition to single-squeeze hubbing technology, which reduced but did not eliminate the occurrence of hub doubling events. Collectors should begin examination by locating the pre-die chip depression on the reverse shield to confirm the die, then flip to the obverse and examine each date digit under 10-15x magnification for the characteristic thickening that distinguishes genuine hub doubling from strike doubling or die deterioration effects.
