2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Sixth in the Wexler Team's catalog of doubled die obverses for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDO-006 produces extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY — hub doubling where the secondary impression lands close enough to the primary that letters appear bolder rather than split. Extensive die markers on both sides provide multiple attribution points beyond the primary doubling. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010, features a union shield symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the nation. Extra thickness doubling on LIBERTY is more subtle than spread or separation doubling, requiring collectors to compare letter width against known normals rather than looking for obvious secondary outlines. NW/SE die crack on the forehead. Short N/S die crack on the T in LIBERTY. Strong NW/SE die scratches through LIBERTY and left of the date. Die scratch SE from the 9 in the date. Strong NW/SE die scratch across the upper lip. Die gouge right of the top of the D in GOD. Short die gouge far right of the last T in TRUST. Reverse: Die gouge touches the top of the shield right of the top. Die gouge between the left edge of the scroll and the rim. Die gouge at the rim below the M in the designer's initials JFM.
