Description

Recognized through asymmetric letter thickening, WDDO-004 of the 2019-P Lincoln Shield Cent shows extra thickness on LIBERTY where the upper left branch of the Y is noticeably thicker than the upper right branch. This asymmetric thickening is diagnostic of hub doubling, as the secondary impression displaced design material preferentially to one side, causing the left branch to receive additional thickness while the right branch remained normal. The contrast between the two branches is the primary identification feature. No significant obverse die markers were noted. Reverse die markers include die chips on the top left side of the shield north of RI in PLURIBUS, providing a confirming diagnostic. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019 1c WDDO-004 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's reverse design featuring a union shield, replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse. Struck in copper-plated zinc at the Philadelphia Mint, this modern Lincoln Cent documents a subtle but diagnostic doubled die where asymmetric Y branch thickness on LIBERTY serves as the primary attribution marker.
