2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2019 1¢ WDDO-001, this Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY and slight extra thickness on the date — a graduated doubling pattern where the hub displacement produced varying degrees of secondary impression across different inscription elements, with LIBERTY showing the stronger effect and the date showing a more subtle manifestation. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot south-southeast of the Y in LIBERTY and small die gouges below the left and right sides of the R in LIBERTY — three closely grouped features near the right end of LIBERTY that create a localized diagnostic cluster. The reverse exhibits progressive die deterioration: a die crack running across the top left of the shield, die chips north of the UR in PLURIBUS, and two short die scratches running west-southwest from the lower left side of the shield north of the O in ONE. The attribution notes include an important catalog management detail — the original 2019 1¢ WDDO-015 listing was found to be a duplicate of this WDDO-001 listing and has since been replaced, demonstrating the Wexler system's ongoing quality control process where duplicate entries are identified and consolidated. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2019 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait, while Lyndall Bass designed the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. The shield's thirteen vertical stripes represent the original colonies, and the die crack across its top left section on this variety's reverse documents the structural stress that the shield design's geometric lines can concentrate in the die steel during high-volume production.
