2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-042
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Aaron Laramee and cataloged as 2019-P WDDR-042 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling with visually impressive results — very nice doubling shows on the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, with additional doubling visible between the column to the left of the door frame and the upper left side of the frame. This architectural-detail doubling on Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home creates distinctive visual anomalies within the building facade that are identifiable under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between and below the S and the second T of TRUST, along with a die gouge to the upper right of the D in GOD. The reverse carries a die break on the lower left side of the Monticello building and a die gouge above the right arch — the die break indicating progressive structural failure on the reverse die that provides a secondary attribution point beyond the doubled die feature itself. Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling occurs when the working hub is angled relative to the working die during an impression, creating displacement that varies across the die face based on each element's distance from the tilt axis — explaining why the doubling concentrates on the upper left door frame area while other portions of the building may show less or no visible doubling. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2019 in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Monticello reverse design, restored in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey designs, is a refined version of Felix Schlag's original 1938 rendering. Aaron Laramee's attribution work contributes to the growing catalog of modern Jefferson Nickel doubled die varieties from the Return to Monticello design era.
